New electronic artist and pop devotee, Kittling, kicks off the new year with his first single Joy – a restless and euphoric ode to cutting loose the ones who weigh you down. With lyrics that bite and synths that kiss it better, Joy is a celebration of “letting go of the people in your life that don’t bring you any happiness.”

Joy was the first taste of Kittling’s brand of off-kilter pop. Influenced by the melodic sweetness and crisp rhythms of producers like Mura Masa, Louis the Child and local synthpop artist GL, Kittling created Joy as a contemporary take on the big choruses and sparkling pop of the 80s.

Kittling, a Scottish slang term meaning to tickle or arouse, was born of a playful impulse to make music that isn’t bound to traditional rules for pop, especially for pop music made by men. In his own words, “Joy is a story of liberation. I wanted to make something that reflects how it really feels to say what you mean to someone who’s crossed you. A lot of people never confront the villains in their life, so I wanted to capture how it feels when you finally do.”

Inspired by African rhythms, 80’s synthwave, and armed with a bright, breathless falsetto Kittling’s music is made for bodies that like to think, as well as feel. His previous work as a producer has received acclaim online and locally, with support from Australian institutions Pilerats, Acid Stag & Avenoir, among others.
