Classical, Opera, Orchestral

Although best known for his Academy Award, BAFTA and Grammy winning score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Tan Dun remains one of China’s most prominent, prolific and audacious composers.

After completing his studies at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and Columbia University, New York, Tan Dun began working on a number of operas, drawing on traditional Chinese instrumentation, the Western operatic style and unchartered avant-garde methods.

Dun’s second opera, Marco Polo (1996), won the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition in 1998, which in turn led to his commission to score Ang Lee’s classic martial arts movie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The film took home no less than four Academy Awards and six further nominations. Dun’s score won Best Score and was also nominated for Best Original Song.

Dun’s other notable film scores include Fallen (1998), Hero (2002) and The Banquet (2006). In 2008 he composed the medal ceremony music for the Beijing Olympics.
